Many delivery jobs out there do not require a CDL. In fact, you can start your own service easily enough. While you're pursuing your CDL for larger shipping opportunities, here are a few other things to consider in the meantime.

Taxi Driver, Personal Transport, Chauffeur

You can always seek to drive people to earn some money. There are several ways to go about doing that these days. There are traditional taxi and personal transportation companies that hire drivers, but there are also other opportunities out there such as transportation network companies.

You do not need a CDL to drive people around. However, depending on where you live and want to work, you may need a special driving license.

If you want to start giving people rides for money on your own, always check with your local laws first. Also, check with your auto insurance company before you start using your personal vehicle for any business.

Non-CDL Delivery Driver

There's a robust market out there for non-CDL delivery drivers. In fact, for many types of delivery services, it's possible to run an entire business without the need for a CDL. Keep in mind the CDL programs vary by state, but generally, a CDL is required for the following situations:

  • Driving a vehicle over 26,001 pounds (including cargo)
  • Driving a vehicle designed to transport 16+ people
  • Transporting hazardous materials

Those are very narrow rules. Outside of those rules is a whole universe of delivery options. Many delivery services, especially ones that stick to a specific area, hire non-CDL drivers. These can include services such as:

  • Food delivery
  • Package delivery
  • Courier service
  • Business delivery
  • Local delivery

There's also a lot of opportunity for you to independently offer delivery services. All of these types of options can help you work, build your experience, and teach you a lot about the shipping and delivery world you're trying to enter. These jobs are out there, and waiting.

If You're A Driver, Then Drive

These services can offer you practice, and give you a more rounded education when it comes to the shipping industry and dealing with people. It's very possible for you to turn any one of these things into a full-fledged business that you may want to stick with.

If you're a driver, then these services offer you an opportunity to use your skills while you prepare to take on bigger jobs in the future. Driver careers don't always start with a CDL. They start with professional driving work.
