Over the last few years, Dubai has become known as a booming and exciting destination. Dubai is one of seven emirates (similar to states) that make up the United Arab Emirates. Located on the coast of the Persian Gulf, Dubai is an international epicenter for jobs and development. Many Americans find themselves preparing to move to Dubai due to job transfers or new job opportunities. If you and your family are moving to Dubai from America, use the following tips:

Prepare All Documentation as Far in Advance as Possible

If you are moving to Dubai for a work opportunity, make sure that your passport does not expire in the next 6 months, as you will be unable to get a visa. After your employer submits an application for an employment visa on your behalf, you will be required to undergo a medical exam to rule out diseases, and then you must submit your medical records, a copy of your employment visa application, a copy of your passport, and a verified copy of your employment offer to the Department of Health and Medical Services in Dubai to obtain a required health card, which is a mandatory requirement for any foreigner who will be working in Dubai.

After you obtain your health card, you can apply for a labor card by sending an application to the Ministry of Labor in Dubai. When you actually get to Dubai, you will need your health card and labor card, along with your passport and original entry permit to obtain a residency visa from the Dubai General Directorate of Residency.

Get Your Belongings in Order

Moving from the United States to Dubai takes a lot of planning, and you will have to decide how much you want to bring with you. This may largely depend on how much of the relocation costs your employer is covering, and whether or not you are renting a furnished house or apartment. Either way, you will want to contact international shipping companies that offer shipping to Dubai far in advance so you can get your items shipped in a timely manner. The Port of Jebel Ali, one of the largest ports in the world, is located in Dubai, so if you have a lot of items to ship, shipping by sea is convenient and relatively affordable. If you do not plan on shipping a large amount of household goods to Dubai, you may want to opt for air freight cargo shipping services; air shipping is typically more expensive than shipping by sea, but your belongings will arrive much faster.

Prepare for Culture Shock

Dubai is very cosmopolitan and international, but it is also very different than the United States. If you are going to be living there for work for an extended period of time, it is in your best interest to learn as much as you can about the local culture and customs so you know what to expect when you arrive.
